Monasticism flourished in the deserts of Egypt in the fourth century, and from this birthplace, spread throughout the remainder of the known world. Men and women from all backgrounds embraced lives of asceticism and prayer. In so doing, they established a new spirituality and model of Christian living.

The Cross is every difficulty ‎which we suffer in view of our love for God, or for our love for people, for the ‎Kingdom of God in general...‎

In ancient times, before Christ came to the world, there was the cross which was used as a horrible instrument of execution. Anyone who committed an awful crime was condemned to be crucified. The authorities would go into the woods and cut two pieces of wood. The shorter one would be affixed to the longer one, thus making a cross. They would then dig a hole in the ground and stand the cross in it. The condemned person would be nailed to it, and since he was nailed hand and foot he did not die right away but suffered for many hours and even days, depending upon his constitution, dying in the midst of spasms and awful pain. Would they take him down from the cross then and bury him? No. They would leave him on it so that dogs, jackals, and birds of prey could eat his body. It was a horrible spectacle, an awful death. And the worst elements of society were condemned to this kind of death in order to be made an example of to frighten everyone.

We celebrate the good deed, the magnificent and splendid action that was accomplished by the woman who poured the fragrant oil on the feet of our Lord Jesus Christ. What is the significance of this incident and why does our great splendid church take special measures to select this particular Gospel for reading on this blessed evening?

The Feast of Pentecost has become one of the greatest feasts celebrated in the church. Therefore, we would like to discuss the Holy Spirit. Because of the importance of the Holy Spirit’s work with us, the Lord said to His disciples, the saints: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you” (Jn 16:7). And told them about Him, “that He may abide with you forever… and will be in you” (Jn 14:16, 17).

He is not here, but He is risen" (Luke 24: 5-6) The news of the risen Christ brought tremendous joy to the disciples, but terrified the Jewish leaders.
